Celebrating Outstanding Contributions to Anthropological Theory, Practice, and Impact

As part of the biennial World Applied Anthropology Congress (WAAC) — the flagship global event of the Anthropological Association for Humankind (AAfH) — these prestigious awards recognize distinguished individuals whose work exemplifies the spirit and transformative potential of anthropology in today’s world.

1.Anthropology for Humankind Excellence Award
Purpose:

To honor individuals whose scholarship bridges the gap between cutting-edge anthropological theory and real-world application. Awardees are those who shape communities, policies, and paradigms through deeply rooted anthropological insight.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in anthropological research and applied practice
  • Original theoretical contributions published in recognized academic platforms
  • Measurable impact through applied initiatives (e.g., community-based projects, policy reform, development programs)
  • Acknowledged by peers for shaping both the discipline and society
2. Lifetime Achievement Award in Anthropology
Purpose:

Recognizes eminent scholars whose lifelong commitment to anthropology has transformed the field through prolific scholarship, mentorship, leadership, and institution-building.

  • A minimum of 30 years of active professional engagement in anthropology
  • Pioneering publications and enduring influence on the discipline
  • Significant contributions to mentoring emerging scholars and shaping institutions
3. Best Paper Presentation Award
Purpose:

To honor outstanding oral presentations that reflect scholarly rigor, innovation, and clarity at WAAC and associated academic platforms.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Senior Category: PhD holders, faculty, or experienced professionals
  • Junior Category: Postgraduate students, early-career researchers (within 5 years of PhD)
  • Judged on originality, depth, presentation clarity, and relevance
4. Best Poster Presentation Award
Purpose:

To celebrate excellence in visual communication of anthropological research that combines academic rigor with creative storytelling.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Open to students and early-career researchers
  • Posters must demonstrate innovative design and effective communication of key ideas
  • Evaluation based on content clarity, aesthetics, and audience engagement
5. Mid-Career Excellence in Anthropology Award
Purpose:

To acknowledge the achievements of professionals in the middle phase of their career who demonstrate interdisciplinary leadership and real-world impact through anthropology.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Age between 35 and 55, with over 10 years of professional experience
  • Proven contributions in research, teaching, and/or policy development
  • Evidence of public engagement, collaboration, and leadership
6. Young Anthropologist Award
Purpose:

To support and recognize early-career anthropologists who exhibit great promise in advancing the discipline through innovative research and social engagement.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Under 35 years of age, or within 5 years of receiving a PhD
  • Active involvement in anthropological research, publication, or community-based work
  • At least one letter of recommendation from a mentor or peer attesting to dedication and potential

3. Submit the following documents:

  • Updated CV or Resume
  • Samples of scholarly or applied work (papers, project reports, publications, etc.)
  • At least one letter of endorsement from a mentor, supervisor, or peer
  • Abstracts or visual material (for presentation/poster awards)
